Großhadern and surroundings

Hadern is the most southwestern district of Munich. Its boundaries are formed by a section of the Munich-Garmisch motorway to the south, Fürstenrieder Straße to the east, Senftenauerstraße to the north and the city boundary to the west.

Originally an old farming village, it was integrated into the municipality in 1938. Structures of the former rural settlement are still clearly recognizable in Großhadern, around the old village center. In large areas of Hadern, loose single-family homes determine the urban appearance. After the Second World War, until the 1980s, large housing estates (Blumenau, Senftenauerstrasse, Neuhadern) were built on the land formerly used for agriculture.

New residential buildings are currently being constructed in the southern area of the Großhadern Major Hospital, partly as rental housing and partly as condominiums. Thanks to the extension of subway line 6 to the Großhadern Clinic (1993), the district (with four stops) is now well served by public transportation.

Clinical Center Großhadern

The universitys Clinical Center Großhadern forms the largest closed hospital complex in Munich. In 1994, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitys Gene Center was put into operation; in 1999, the entire chemical-pharmaceutical faculty was relocated to Hadern. With the Childrens Center of the District of Upper Bavaria and its associated Montessori school, as well as the Augustinum residential home for the elderly and its associated Stiftsklinik, further social institutions are located in the district, which, together with the clinic, provide a large proportion of the jobs.

Judo Olympic base

In addition to numerous sports (soccer, handball, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, mountain sports, aikido and fitness), TSV Großhadern Munich is world famous for its judo department. Numerous Olympic participants, Olympic champions, world champions and Bundesliga teams have their sporting home here.

The Haderner village festival

Every year in May the soccer department of TSV Großhadern organizes the popular Haderner village festival. The Haderner village festival is now known beyond the borders of Großhadern and has become a fixed institution in the Munich folk festival scene. Also because excellent well-known show bands, local cabaret artists or prominent politicians like to perform there again and again.

Martinsried Sports Center

For example, our sports-mad guests can reach the Martinsried sports center in 5 minutes by car. There, in addition to all the classic fitness programs, you have numerous tennis, squash and badminton courts at your disposal. Afterwards, you can unwind in the wellness oasis.

What would Munich be without its world-famous Biergärten. The typical Munich Biergarten is incomparable and is the expression of the original Bavarian lifestyle and coziness.
Even in our district we do not have to do without this pleasure. Below are some Biergärten in our immediate vicinity.

History

Hotel Thalmair was founded in 1977 by Lothar Thalmair, the current owner.

However, the hotel building itself is much older. It was built by the great-grandfather of the current owner in 1900 and was used as an inn in Großhadern, which at that time had a purely rural structure.

The Thalmair family has restored the house again and again since the hotel opened. The old building was completely renovated in 2001 and extended by a spacious and modern new building in 2008.

Here is a small selection of historical pictures around the building, family and place.
